Every now and then, I come across a sign that reaffirms something…on this particular day, I was rushing into our local library to pick up a book that I had reserved, when the word “vintage” caught my eye.

In the middle of the book display near the door was a book by Dawn Porter called “This Old Thing”.

Now I believe that was a sign, because as soon as I picked it up and flicked through the pages, it was like it was written for me!

Fate had put that book right where I would see it.

I have heard of Porter, with people telling me that I must watch her show but I hadn’t manage to see any of it…however, after reading this book cover to cover, I now definitely want to!

And it is all because of what she wrote in her first chapter, appropriately titled “How it started for me”…

Her journey started when she was around twelve years old, however I took quite a bit longer as I was in my forties before I made the vintage discovery.

But from then on, her words explain exactly how it was for me…that all of a sudden, clothes made sense…I finally understood a passion for fashion.

Vintage clothing is the way to show who I am…the real me…the me who loves bold colour and styles from past eras…the me that doesn’t want to wear what everyone else is wearing…

Instead of hating clothes shopping, I am now addicted to finding new treasures that will brighten my wardrobe…and love meeting the fantastic people who are in the vintage community.

The decision of what to wear is one of delicious anticipation…especially when I discover new combinations amongst my vintage finds.

I also love how vintage clothes come with a story…someone, somewhere has worn them before.

Sadly, I don’t know much of where my vintage outfits come from, but I am enjoying being part of their next chapter.

If you think vintage won’t work for you, give it a try…but I warn you, you may end up somewhat addicted like me!

Good places to start…Minette’s Vintage, Frocks and Slacks and OTC in Melbourne…The Vintage Drawer and The Zoo Emporium in Sydney…these stores cover high end vintage to retro bargains.

Break out from the ranks, and join me in full colour…it’s much more fun out here, I can tell you!
