Vaseline…I reckon just about every household around the world will have a jar of this sitting in a cupboard!

We have always had some, but it wasn’t until recently that I re-discovered this wonder jelly, and was curious to find out how it came about.

Vaseline

So first, a bit of history…

In about 1860, Robert Augustus Chesebrough, a 22 year old British chemist, was intrigued by the naturally occurring byproduct of the oil drilling process in the small town of Titusville, in Pennsylvania USA.

Five years later,  he patented the process, and called it the “Wonder Jelly”.

It was in 1872, that he registered the jelly as Vaseline…a word created from the combination of the German word for water, wasser, and the greek word for oil, oleon.

And Vaseline has been popular ever since…to give you some idea, in 1874, two years after it became known as Vaseline, it was being sold across the US at the rate of 1 jar a minute…that equates to over 1400 a day!

Move forward to 2005, and ever 39 seconds a tub was sold somewhere…in the world!!

Pretty amazing for a petroleum byproduct!

So what can Vaseline do?

There are many, many uses for it but for today’s My Friday Five, I have selected some beauty uses that I had no idea Vaseline could be used for…

Split Ends

You can help smooth split ends in between trims by adding a touch of  Vaseline to the ends of your hair!

Grow Lashes

Apparently if you put a little on your eyelashes at night, they will grow! And you can also use it as mascara…

Make Perfume Last

If you put some Vaseline on your wrist and neck and then spray perfume, it will help the scent to last.

Lip Scrub

Apply some to your lips, then scrub gently using a toothbrush. When finished apply a little more to have silky, smooth lips as it will help to moisturise and keep them from drying out.

Prevent Lipstick on Teeth

Apparently, many celebrities use this trick…Vaseline is a common preventative measure taken when applying lipstick. Apply a very small amount of Vaseline to your teeth and it will prevent your lips from sticking to your teeth

And there you have it…five good reasons to have a jar of Vaseline on hand…millions of people over 140+ years can’t be wrong!
